It was built to serve British officers, expatriates and travellers passing through on the route between Britain and Asia, and when British officials encouraged the founder to expand into Kuwait in 1934, his sons carried the business forward along the same route the region's oil industry was about to take — Bahrain, then Dubai, then Abu Dhabi, one market at a time.
