Butler, both recent US graduates working in the Gulf, shared bunk beds in an apartment off Sheikh Zayed Road and lived on AED 10 meals while they built a classifieds site for the expatriate market nobody else was serving properly.

They stepped back from daily operations in 2013 after selling a majority stake to Naspers. The site now sits inside Dubizzle Group, the company formerly called Emerging Markets Property Group, alongside Bayut.
