What is the difference between Alibaba and AliExpress?
Alibaba.com is a wholesale marketplace where businesses order in bulk from manufacturers and suppliers, at minimum quantities and negotiated prices. AliExpress is the same group's retail marketplace, where you buy a single item at a listed price and it ships to your door. If you are buying for yourself, use AliExpress. If you are buying stock, materials or branded goods for a business, Alibaba.com is built for that.
Both belong to Alibaba Group, which is headquartered in Hangzhou, China. Alibaba.com launched in 1999 as the group's first business, built to connect Chinese manufacturers with business buyers abroad, and AliExpress followed in 2010. The rest of this guide compares how buying, paying and getting your money back work on each, from a Gulf shopper's side.

When AliExpress is the right choice
Use AliExpress when you want a small number of items for yourself or your home: a phone case, a lamp, a set of kitchen tools. You pay a listed price, the item ships to you, and you do not have to talk to the seller unless something goes wrong.
Buyer Protection refunds you if the item does not arrive within the guaranteed delivery window, or if it arrives damaged or not as described and you claim within 15 days of receiving it. A change-of-mind return is at your cost unless the listing carries free returns. Read the seller's recent reviews before you buy, because the seller is the retailer on your order.
AliExpress runs its biggest sale, 11.11, in the second week of November. Codes we confirm for the Gulf are on the Savooh AliExpress Saudi Arabia and UAE pages.
When Alibaba.com is the right choice
Use Alibaba.com when you need quantity: stock for a shop, packaging for a product, uniforms, or goods with your own branding. Suppliers set a minimum order quantity, which can range from a handful of pieces to thousands, and the unit price falls as the quantity rises. Many suppliers will discuss a smaller trial order with a new buyer.
The process is closer to a purchase from a factory than a shop. You message the supplier with your quantity and specifications, ask for that tier's price, often order a paid sample, then place the bulk order. Shipping and import charges usually come on top of the product price, and larger orders tend to go through a freight forwarder.
Trade Assurance lets you claim a refund if your order has not shipped, goes missing or arrives with defects, within 30 days of delivery. Alibaba.com describes this cover for payments made through the platform, by an online method at checkout or a wire transfer made via Alibaba.com. Paying a supplier directly outside the platform steps out of that description.
Offers we have listed for Alibaba.com, including two first-order codes from US coupon sites that Savooh has not tested, are on the Alibaba Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt pages.
Which one is cheaper?
Per unit, Alibaba.com is usually lower, because you are buying at wholesale quantities. For a single item, AliExpress is cheaper in practice: you avoid the minimum quantity, a sample cost and freight arrangements. The fair comparison is the total that reaches your door.
- On AliExpress: the item price, delivery, and in Saudi Arabia 15% VAT on goods imported through e-commerce, plus duty for some categories above the customs threshold. Some listings include tax at checkout and others leave it to be collected on arrival.
- On Alibaba.com: the unit price at your quantity, sample costs, freight, customs duty and VAT charged by your country on arrival. Ask your forwarder for a landed-cost quote before you compare suppliers.
Then compare that total with a local price. For electronics you would claim warranty on, a local store such as noon or Amazon includes local returns and warranty in its price. Product Check tells you what we know about a product link before you pay.
A simple rule
If the quantity you need fits in one parcel and you will use the items yourself, start on AliExpress. If you need more than a seller would ship as a parcel, or you want the product made or branded for you, start on Alibaba.com and plan for samples, freight and import charges.
Going to either site
Use AliExpress Saudi Arabia, AliExpress UAE, Alibaba.com from Saudi Arabia or Alibaba.com from the UAE. Savooh may earn a commission if you buy through this link; your price is the same.
Questions shoppers ask
Can I buy one item on Alibaba.com?
Only where a supplier's minimum order quantity allows it. Many listings set a minimum above one piece; for single items, AliExpress is the better fit.
Are Alibaba and AliExpress the same company?
Both belong to Alibaba Group. Alibaba.com launched in 1999 for wholesale, AliExpress in 2010 for retail.
Which has longer buyer protection?
Alibaba.com's Trade Assurance gives 30 days from delivery to claim a refund. AliExpress's Buyer Protection gives 15 days from receipt for damaged or not-as-described items.
Does Alibaba.com deliver to Saudi Arabia and the UAE?
Yes. Many listings show a shipping quote at checkout, and larger orders usually go through a freight forwarder. Import charges are separate from the product price.
Is Alibaba.com cheaper than AliExpress?
Per unit at wholesale quantities, usually. For one or two items, AliExpress usually costs less once samples and freight are counted.
